« on: October 04, 2008, 22:13 »
hi
ive never tasted /grown swede and today i noticed one of them was exposed out of the ground, so i pulled it up. top (exposed) 1/2 was purple and bottom creamy colour. is the purple bit ok to eat or is it like the green bit on a spud?

yes, exactly like that!

Just to avoid any confusion, if the top is purple and the bottom is white and about tennis ball sized then you've likely got a turnip there.  Swedes are the large, yellow/purple ones that you often see in the shops

I love to boil swede, mash it and then fry it in a pan that has just been used to fry bacon or sausages.  Add some HP sauce and some spuds and it is heaven on a plate :D Unfortunately mine seem small this year...

Strangely for some reason, swedes are what we Northern Irish actually call turnips.  As for an actual turnip I've never seen one in a green grocer or supermarket.

Our allotment neighbour gave us a couple of sweed yesterday and the taste was amazing.  Mashed with carrot and mixed with butter and nutmeg.  Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way our neighbour is Irish and calls the small white ones sweed and the large ones turnip.  I do it the other way round.  They are all beautiful, especially if they are home grown.  :)

I agree the difference in taste between supermarket and Lottie grown is amazing.

Lottie grown are so much sweeter and tastier.
