Are my potatoes doomed?
« on: September 07, 2008, 15:11 »
Soothing words needed, although I'm afraid that the reality is bleak  ( into thermos).

Went to the lotty this morning, after being on holiday for a week, and my winter potatoes (Maris Peer) are showing early signs of blight. I've dug one plant up as they've already started to flower (only planted 3 weeks ago!) and they're about the size of a large marble. If I cut all the tops off, will the tubers swell any more or are they all doomed?
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

They were second earlies for October-Christmas. Information received suggested that I should plant mid August. Should they be later?

First year at this allotment lark, so about as green as my cabbages  .

I have never tried planting so late,i think the weather is realy against you.if i did then i would consider planting them in a greenhouse or polly tunnel.

Oh dear, well we live and learn. I've only got a quarter plot, as the council are trying to spread them around as many people as possible, any cover is out.

Might have to start angling for more space and expanding my empire!
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my ramblings.
