chilli problem
« on: August 24, 2008, 17:11 »
Hi all,

I seem to have be a problem with my little chilli plants.
At first i thought it was compost on the leaves, but then i noticed it everywhere else in between where the main plant meets the side shoots.
The stuff is black and appears to be poo i think from insects, but i could be wrong.

Does anyone know what it is, or if it is just my imagination  and i'm just paranoid after my tomato scare.

Thanks for your help

Kind regards

Can't tell from the photos.  Are the leaves being eaten?

Thanks Ice, yes they are. Its taken weeks to get them back to life after slugs and snails devoured them down to the bone.
I'll try and get some clearer pics and put them up.

Mine were being eaten and I found a caterpillar on them eventually.  (It's now in caterpillar heaven).

Do you mean the natural colour markings on the stems by any chance? Usually more like dark purple than black.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Well just been out again and guess what i found tons of blooming caterpillars small and big hiding everywhere. God only knows where they were when i first took the pics of the plant. Well they aint they anymore

Gobs i think i know what you mean now about the markings. On closer inspection they are purple, after scrubbing off the black stuff i found it underneath.
The pics are still not brilliant i'm not a camera whizz in the slightest.
Hopefully the black stuff will go now that ive removed the thieving caterpillars off them.

They's me last year picking caterpillars up in a tub and dropping them off at the school field, now its heaven all the way. What a change in attitude in a year.
