Broody Hen
« on: August 20, 2010, 08:40 »
Morning.  My hen has only been laying for approx 6 weeks so is still young.
She has decided to go broody, which I haven't heard of being so young.
I have shut her out of the coop but she just then sits on the ground.
I know you have to cool them down but what is the best way of doing this? I have tried putting her in a run with a wire bottom to keep her off the ground and cool her but she just sits on it (doesn't worry her in the least)
Next door has suggested putting her under carrage into cold water for a few seconds, as this is what used to be done.   Is this cruel or is it ok to try it?
She is a black rock and has the sweetest temprement.

Going to have to post and run as got to go to work, will look in later

Thanks for any help
Jane

I tried dunking mine in cold water, the little b****rs loved it! and it didn't make any difference. One of mine lays for 3 weeks then goes broody for 7 weeks regular as clockwork and nothing will break her broodiness. >:(
