Has anyone picked up any of the Starbucks  free used coffee grounds in the last couple of days? A friend went into Starbucks, Quay Street, Manchester on Tuesday morning, to be told  "We dont do it any more  and we just CHUCK IT IN THE BIN".  We thought this was terrible and didnt like the emphasis on the store throwing away a useful byproduct.
I've emailed Starbucks but no reply yet.
Wondered if this was a maverick store, a stroppy employee or was in fact a cancellation of the garden compost scheme?

Dunno Polly but I do remember someone saying that really to take anything away like that you need to be a registered waste carrier or something like that  :shock: bureaucracy gone mad again  !
So perhaps its something to do with that.

I've picked some up from a new store in last Friday so unless its been this weekend its that store only

Perhaps they had no takers so ended up with a coffee ground mountain!!!!

I think richyrich7 has a point there.  All waste must be taken away by a registered carrier and there is a duty of care to make sure that the waste doesn't end up in the wrong place. I don't know about the situation down south but in Scotland you could probably get round in by applying for an exemption to the waste management licensing to deposit the coffee grounds on your land/allotment but then you would have to do this for all people who pick up some coffee grounds. Not very practical!

Went and checked my nearest Starbucks in York and the scheme is still promoted with a basket of bagged up ground sprominenetly on display so I was able to take one. It must have been a very ignorant or lazy member of staff in Manchester. I dont think the PR people in HQ would be very happy to hear how their good work is being undone.

I was in Starbucks, Trafford Centre (Manchester) last Friday and there was a bin for coffee grounds, available to take but they were all gone. So it must just be a rogue store coz every other one still seems to giving them away...
