Tomato Question
« on: June 29, 2008, 16:38 »
Hi

Have brought our tomatoes from seed and are really proud how many we have managed to grow.  Trouble is we have too many, I have given away as many as I can but still have several in the greenhouse.  Definately don't want to through them away and have been told it's far too cold in this part of the country to put them outside.

Well they are growing really well and have lots of flowers but also lots of leaves.  We are just a bit concerned if too many leaves will cause the tomatoes problems.  Do we need to de-leaf a little?

I have been taking all other advice on here about tomatoes ie mist and tap to enhance pollination plus feed once a week.  Is there anything else I should know

Thanks in advance

cheers

I would stick em outside with good supports, you won't get as many tomatoes but never the less they should be fine. As for the leaves you should leave em on but maybe take the bottom leaves of so that they are not touching the soil

I'd agree, a lot of toms are hardy enough to go outside, even if recommended for gh growing, you could make them a bit of shelter outdoors, like a plastic sheeting or a pane of glass on the wind side. Or in pots on the patio, etc, a lot of sheltered places like that.

Foliage will depend on variety, some even if bush I find the need to thin out a bit, so the fruit gets a bit more sunlight.

Cheers for that - perhaps outside is not such a bad idea then - in greenhouse will take of some of the foliage as it is getting rather green in there.  :)
