Is it possible to slow hens down for laying?????
« on: June 07, 2008, 19:09 »
Not that I am complaining- but we have 42 eggs in the fridge at the moment    I´m giving 12 away tomorrow.  We have 10 hens, 5 are around 18 months old and the other 5 are about 9 months. They did go down to 3-4 a day but now they are back in full swing!  8 Wednesday, 10 Thursday 8 Friday and 7 today.  I can cope with 3-4 eggs a day!!  We live on a track so no passing traffic to sell them to and the neighbours (all bar one) have their own hens. I pickled some (eggs not neighbours) on Thursday- I tried one today- not sure I am keen on pickled eggs.
The girls get layers mash and grain mixed together, assorted green bits, fruit (if it goes over ripe) and they free range around the orchard.
They just need to tone down their laying for a week or two!!

You can put them off lay by greatly restricting their feed.  But to be honest I think that cruel  :(

I couldn´t do that Aunt Sally they would never let me forget!!  As soon as we go into the garden they are there demanding food/weeds/a pat!  Guess it is cakes (for freezer) merangues (for neighbour) and any other egg recipe I can think of!  I did use one tonight when I put chicken in breadcrumbs, so now just 41 in the fridge

No Aunt Sally, we are too rural!  Our son is coming to visit in a week and a bit, so that will use up some eggs, bet the hens stop laying when he comes out.  Last time I gave loads away I got 1-2 eggs a day for acouple of weeks!

I'd have thought putting your chicken in breadcrumbs would slow down her laying ... :?
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

How about freezing some for wintertime? I lightly whisk 2 eggs together and then put them in a very clean yoghurt pot and freeze it. When defrosted it looks grim but it still makes great cakes and it's ok for scrambled egg.

As I make near on 100 Christmas puds each year (not just greedy I sell them) I use them up in September to December.

I have frozen them in the past Pamela.  then when they stop laying again, you can use them for cakes, scrambled, omelettes etc, but no good for fried eggs!!

 at the chicken in breadcrumbs.. maybe you could sell them? advertise on the gate.. or just get to know your neighbours more and give them away? Thinking friendly american neighbour with a basket of egss

But if all else fails.. what about a homeless charity or halfway house? surely somewhere like that could use them?

I never thought of freezing excess eggs!  I have some yoghurt pots so will give it a try :D
We went to see my cousin in France a week ago,   before we headed off I took eggs down to another neighbour (he wasn´t at his ´country´ house- he has a house in the town too) so  on the way back I gave the dozen eggs to a family who have just a plot of land they use as an allotment by us and no house there, they were there putting up a fence.  I´ve not seen them since, I don´t think I killed them off!

I don't think there is anything like that around where Pamela is Porffor, nice idea, but I think if you are homeless in rural spain you live anywhere you can!

She's only just got her telephone line!!!

The egg glut in my fridge is over :D  :D  :D   Moron Mercedes (not neighbour Mercedes) she is  neighbour Mercedes cousin and Lives in Moron de la Frontera, she  has taken 3 dozen to sell to her neighbours :D  :D   So she paid me 2€ a dozen-  they sell ´free range campo eggs´ here for 1 € a dozen  so now my egg pot has 8€  cos neighbour Mercedes sold a dozen to the painter man for me last week while we were away.  Neighbour Mercedes sells her eggs to her next door neighbour.  Almost got enough for the next sack of food :)
