what likes the wet?
« on: June 02, 2008, 13:57 »
Last year flooded lottie :x  this year for some odd reason i have an area half way down about 3 foot wide and 10 foot long that this weekend after the rain was really waterlogged - lettuce drowned and in parts the soil is like slurry it does have a bit more clay in it but i do not want to waste the space this year - i thought next year i would make raised beds there  - so question what would grow there this year - knowing that more heavy rain is expected july - the area does dry out eventually - are there any water loving veg that wouldn't mind :?: or do i use it as a water feature

Watercress is all that comes to mind, and possibly celery. Other plants hate soggy roots. Other than those, you might consider building those raised beds asap and you can put in whatever you like.

Try some cress and mustard. If it is really bad i suggest you get some sharp sand and mix that in with a lot of ash into the soil, it'll help to break up the clay and really improve the soil quality. Or so i'm told.

Tweaky great idea - all those aching backs  - might give watercress a try never grown it before but love the stuff - looks like I'd better get pallet scrounging for the raised beds earlier than i'd planned - here's hoping we do get a dry spell or I'll need longer wellies :)

Love the idea of a jacuzzi for tired allotmenteers

Seriously, try lazy beds, the water will make a amess of the paths but, at leat the veggies won't drown.

Or you could just raise ridges for cucurbits. Tomatoes would probably like it like that too.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Beegly.

I love the taste of water cress. I would have thought one would have to go down the hydroponics way though.

Must give it a trial one day.

I have grown it this year for the first time.......in a pot that stands in a deep tray, have to keep it topped up with 2-3 inches of water, ideally a pot in a bucket would be good, but mine is luvverly.  Can be grown in wet trenches.
