to much compost material
« on: May 25, 2011, 22:01 »
Just wondering, ive had my allotment since august ish last year, ive been collecting allsorts of composting material since then and now have approxamatly a ton and a half and about a half a ton of manuar, my plot is 15mtrs by 3.6 mtrs, have i got to much? the reason im asking is because there is a old boy on the plot and he keeps telling me if im not careful i will make my ground to rich ??? and i wont be able to grow anything, funny that as he keeps telling me now that my ground is dead :(

The great thing about being an 'old boy' on the allotments is that you can talk drivel and people listen to you because they think you have loads of experience.

If the compost/manure are well rotted just spread it on....but obviously not three foot deep!!

My compost bin is around 2.5m x 3.5m. The idea was to have two on the go but one over-flowed into the other and the division disappeared.  ::)

Each winter I empty the lot onto my plot digging most of it in as I go in exactly the same way as my father did for 50 years before me. The soil is wonderful. The digging is... good for you.  ;)

Just don't end up with more compost bin that growing area

You can never have too much compost!

Just dig it in to the ground and lay it on top as a mulch and if you don't use it all straight away then cover it and use it as you need to.

The only time the ground can be too rich is if your growing carrots or parsnips as it will cause them to fork.

I think this old boy may be after some for himself

What i do is liisten to the old boys on the plot and then make my own mind up on the information i get from them and wether i use that information!
You will find that they all have thier own ideas but they don't all agree  ;)

I sometimes read stuff from people advocating the "no dig" approach and it always sounds like a good idea but what puts me off is never having enough organic stuff to mulch the ground. By the sounds of it you might have enough to give it a go. Check out

Assuming that one ton is 1 cu.m. or 1,000 litres, then your 3 cu.m. (half compost, half manure) will cover your area of 15M x 3.6M to a depth of 2 inches.

Sounds just right to me!

I don't think you can ever have 'too much' compost.

We make as much as we can, but it always seems to have to be 'stretched', or shared between the flowers, shrubs, fruit trees and the veg plot.

I have a number of bins on the go, and will set up more as it's never enough. I too must share it between veg crops, fruit crops and flowers.

I agree, you can never have enough. I make absolutely loads and hate wasting any compostibles. A crime in my eyes  :D  I am a non-digger so lots of home made compost and manure is essential.  I was all smug to be able to earth up my spuds with homemade compo  :)  Those builders rubble sacks are good for composting  I fill them up during the course of the year and then plant squashes our courgettes in them when they're full  :)

Yes some of the old boys talk utter twaddle. One told me to burn all the rasps on my plot as they'd be diseased. They were absolutely fine  >:(
