have I got a broody hen?
« on: May 09, 2008, 16:38 »
I have a pekin bantam who for the last two days has hardly moved from the nest box.... I moved her today as she was sitting on the eggs that the other hens had laid, she was very aggressive (in a little bantam sort of way) sort of growling and trying to peck!

I put her outside and shut the hen house door so that she could not go in,she is now allpuffed up, preening like madandrunning round the garden ranting and raving...what do you think?

We do not have a cockrel as we do not want babies....not at the moment anyway!

had not intended to as at the moment we only have a little coop thingy for the three of them to sleep in at night... they free range all day.  An eglu arrives at the end of this month so perhaps we could then.... how long will she be like this until she realises nothing is happening?

At the moment I take "the broody" out of the little coop each morning so that the other two girls can go and lay..... I have to put her in a small run otherwise she keeps trying to get back in by throwing herself at the coop...this is tragic.... Surely she will stop? she cannot spend the rest of her life like this.... can she?

If she is still like it when the new house comes then I will get eggs......poor girl!

she will lose interest in being broody in a week or two. Isolating them with meagre rations for a day or two will often break their broodiness.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I do hope she returns to her normal giddy self soon, she isj ust so pathetic, I have forced her out of the house today again, but still she is throwing herself at the door...... once this episode has"passed" will it mean that she will keep doing it?

pekins make great mums so she will probably go broody every now and then but not all the time she will lose interest after a while this time and prolly go broody again later in the year.

or thats my experience of them anyway.

hope that helps good luck!

I think my little pekin is "back to normal" yesterday and today she was pushing and shoving to get out of the hen house when we opened the door...thank goodness! don't know when she will start to lay again? but it is good to see her running (wadling) around with the others and having a good time........
