My tomato plants seem to be growing root like projections from (in some cases) midpoint up the stem, is this normal? :?

Yes! Mine did that last year. If you are in a position of being able to pot them on again you can bury some of the stem so the little rootlets can grow into the soil and suck up more water and grub

This is quite a good idea    if you are growing them on the plot as you are creating more 'anchorage' for when the wind blows!

Cor I didnt think of that, they would root very easily.
 
I always thought that plants only had their natural rooting hormone up to the cotyledon, though as tomatoes seem to grow along the ground (when not given support), it makes sense to anchor the plant along the stem also, interesting!
