Spuds 'n slugs
« on: May 04, 2008, 16:31 »
Well after the total disaster with spuds 'n slugs last year, I was wondering where my spuds were this year, so I dug a few up and they were well.... munched by DAMN ARRGGHH slugs..

totally gutted about it... so went to town with slug pellets all over where my spuds are... is it worth doing that or wasting my pellets? worth just digging all the spuds up and planting something else? gutted...  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x

Let's hope for some dry weather which seems to reduce the problem. I grow Desiree as they're rock hard and they do say the slugs don't bother with em as much as other varieties

I grow Charlotte, which seems to be a pretty resistant variety.

Don't forget that there are underground slugs and other nasties which may feed on your spud tubers.  Slug pellets won't have much impact on them; for this, you probably need to try nematodes (microscopic things which you buy, water on a couple times in the season, and which do horrid things to the baddies   ).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I was told before planting mine this year to try putting salt down both in the trenches and on top of them, apparentely it has worked for others :)

charlotte were the worst so far...

nematodes - never knew that.. I am off to get some tomorrow as my spuds will be terrible otherwise, thanks for this... as it was the underground slugs eating the seed tubers, and the pellets were sheer desperation.

Oh, yes, then I don't need to add any more for cooking!! LOL

Seriously, just put it in the bottom of the trench, cover the spuds with soil, and sprinkle a bit more salt on the top of the soil.

Won't the salt just dissolve in the moisture though?  :?

Correct, so some incorporate slug pellets in the soil.

On the other hand - and yes, Desiree is by no means immune -, seed spuds going is no concern if there are rooted chits on them.

As weather and soil warms - as CQ noted - slug activity resides, last year was somewhat exceptional, new potatoes usually escape any much damage and charlotte comes out without spoil and we do have heavy clay with load of slugs. Are you sure it's slugs? :?

Problem starts with long left in potatoes, they move in and don't come out.
