Courgettes vs Marrows
« on: April 09, 2008, 20:17 »
I grow loads of courgettes, but by late Summer I get fed up with eating them so always let a couple grow big,4-5 lbs.

There is an old guy I know who is a supposed marrow expert who says that they dont taste any where near as good as a proper Marrow.

Is this true ?, I thought they would taste the same as they look the same. :?

It is perfectly true, with the one exception I know of, that is Round de Nice and similar other names it's sold under, which is good young and old all the same.

Last summer I had so many courgettes I was almost willing the plant to die.  I let one develop into a huge, marrow like specimen and it was tastless and hard, very unlike a true marrow.  Not the same thing unless as Gobs said you get a seed that is good in both the young and old form.
Cheese makes everything better.

I agree with Gobs and Ice, if you want a marrow grow a marrow. Some recipies will only work if you use a marrow, not an overgrown courgette!
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I think every way of cooking a courgette I did it  :D   I made a really good "carrot" cake with the yellow courgettes, complete with the frosty topping and chopped nuts, just to see if my old man could spot the difference. Could he eck!  He hates courgettes        If you grow em you have to eat em is the lore  :D

I only let them grow big so some of my neighbours could use them in their Chutney...I dont suppose they'd notice the difference between my overgrown courgette and a proper Marrow.

The only way I like to eat even a small courgette is roasted in the oven with tonnes of Garlic and chilli.

Are there any other ways of making this somewhat bland veg any more exciting ?   :D

Hi,
Try cheesy courgettes!
in  a shallow pan, olive oil, 2xclove garlic, fry courgettes till golden. meanwhile cook some pasta of choice like bows or penne. when both ready, combine, add grated mature cheese / some parmesan if you like, plus a tsp or 2 of dried parsley. lovely!
Cheers,

Wayne.

I love them sliced, dipped in batter and deep fried. Serve with a chilli and garlic dip. Very tasty  :D
