What I always do from July onwards is carefully remove enough soil from around the base of an odd stem until you can see the bulb, then you can check how big they're getting.

They topple over, as onions, when ready. 8)

Ah! Glad this topic came up, been wondering the same myself. My garlic has long foliage almost like spring onion, no flower - does that come later? I had cloves that started to sprout and planted them last autumn as an experiment  :) Thanks peeps

You supposed to plant in the autumn, first part of winter but not supposed to have flowers, if you spot any, behead ruthlessly and eat in salads, soups, etc.

You don't really have a choice on when to stop garlic growing as it will stop itself - by the stalk starting to dry out/die back. No bending over stalks like you do with onions. Most fall planted garlic is finished by the end of July latest, usually earlier. Once the stalk starts drying out you can pull it, no need to wait until the top is dead.

Yes I'll go with you, Trillium. you tell by when the stalk starts to go yellow. I've never had a garlic stalk bend over - they're very strong & sturdy - even when dead!
