I know that can be dangerous.

This hobby of ours can be a very rewarding pastime but what I haven't seen as yet, is any chicken accomodation that obviously has the disabled poultry keeper in mind.
Here's a photo of one of my shop bought chicken sheds.

If I was disabled, had a bad back or something like that, I'd really be struggling to continue keeping  chickens using these. I was wondering if anyone has of yet of come up with purpose designed chicken housing.
They would have to take things into account such as height and how far the people would have to reach in to collect eggs and clean out. I'm not sure, because I've never had one but I reckon that even Aunt Sallys beloved  Eglu must have quite a bit of bending attached to it.
If a company was to come up with a range of more user friendly chicken sheds, I think they'd be on a winner and more importantly open up chicken keeping to a new group of previously denied poultry keepers.

i think the typical suppliers wont get a huge call for such designs, so will do normal types, but im sure any half decent shed/fencing company would be pleased to make one to spec as needed.

I guess it depends on the disability - a bad back would need different design for instance to wheelchair users. In the case of wheelchairs it would be a case of designing based on access height, not difficult at all, but would probably need the house to be raised up, which in itself would be usefull in reducing vermin anyway. My homemade house is raised and on wheels, maybe not high enough, but im sure with a bit of rethinking a suitable design would be easily found.

I dont have contact with a suitable group to 'measure up', otherwise i would come up with a easy access design and post it on here. It is a good idea. But it would be important to ensure that all aspects are accessible, from the nest boxes to cleaning out, filling feeders/drinkers etc, and also access to the run area. Just having nest box access for egg colecting would be fine for a 'working farm' type access, with desabled visitors, but for disabled keepers they would need and want complete accesibility

have you talked to one of the suppliers? im sure they would be pleased to market a fully accessible solution

Interesting and thoughtful idea Bodger, I reckon the eglu cube would possibly be a good start for the disabled keeper but rather pricey like all of omlets products.

I'm sure there would be quite a bit of bending with the Eglu

I was going to say that Richy

No bending with the cube Bodger.  It's raised of the ground with the run going underneath.  They also make run extns to accomodate more chooks.
