Paddling Chickens
« on: March 12, 2008, 21:54 »
We've given up trying to keep the grass nice in the chicken run, but now it has turned to mud and yesterday when we had torential rain, the girlies were paddling around in the mud. I went out with some treats for them and they were slipping and sliding alover the place...it was funny to watch
However I wondered if it was ok for them to have wet feet all the time. Does anyone know if they can get foot rot or some nasty infection from overly wet toes?
I intend to get wood chippings as soon as I can, but that won't be for a few days yet.
Thier house and shelter are dry, but they won't go in there!! Too much fun paddling

Hi westie,

I don't think it does them good tobe in the wet too long but if you can give them plenty of perching space outside they can get up and out of it.

We use bark chippings which does keep them a bit drier.

You should see what Babe has done. She posted up photos yesterday on a thread about the new carpet.

LOTS of bark which looks great.

Paddling about in sloppy mud is not good for them.  Put some straw down in you can't get the bark yet !

Mine have a covered run & access to the swamp I call a garden, so at least part of their range is dry, all food & treats are given in the covered bit to try and encourage them to keep dry at this time of yr.
