Cheapest beer for slug pubs
« on: July 21, 2023, 09:26 »
I don't drink so dunno about state of play on sources and prices of beer.  Got some from Lidl at about a fiver for 4 cans.  Anyone know a brand and shop for cheaper?

Good morning Candide,
I don't know the prices of various beers, but I would tend to go for a very dark beer or stout rather than a pale lager.  The smell seems to be stronger so may entice the slugs from a greater distance.  Don't forget to cover the trap with a saucer (leaving a gap beneath of course).
I think the older the slugs tipple becomes it is more effective.

Hope you have a good catch!  Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

That sounds cheap to me. I bought some bottles of beer this week at over £2 a bottle checked in Sainsbury’s it was similar. If you visit pubs but just don’t drink maybe you could ask if they could fill a plastic container ( you provide!) with beer from when they are changing barrels etc. They will have old beer that can’t be sold and is just chucked away.
Perhaps not ask for this on a Friday or Saturday night though!!
Good luck HH
Keep digging

You can get far cheaper beer than that in supermarkets. As you're not drinking it, it doesn't matter what it tastes like. I've seen beer in Lidl for less than £3 for 4 cans

Thanks folks.   I knew about the drip trays etc from pubs cos used to run late in laws pub for short relief periods but feels a bit cheeky asking for slops if I'm not drinking.

A bit similar to asking for coffee grounds, for use as a fertilizer.

i asked at a local cafe a few years ago and provided them with a nice new B&Q orange bucket, which they managed to fill for me in quite a short time.

I put this on the allotment, but after reading somewhere too much coffee isn't a great thing for the soil, i stopped. The bucket was later changed into a nice tomato pot, after a few holes were drilled.

You don't really need to use beer, just mix a little baker's yeast and flour in a little warm water., let it fizz a short while, then pour it into the trap! Much cheaper than beer!

They don't die as happy, but there again, I've never thought to ask them how it feels...
