Evening all
I’m planning to tidy up my strawberry bed and the RHS suggests possibly planting through biodegradable membrane. I have lots of standard weed fabric but I’m not sure that this would be suitable to plant through. What do you use as a “biodegradable” membrane.
Many thanks HH
Keep digging

Hello HH

1 assume what you need a biodegradeable membrane to do is to lay over the soil and supress weeds long enough for your plants to establish and for some other weed control (like mulch) to take over weed control.

Try cardboard. You can either cut holes in it to plant your strawberries, or leave gaps between sheets of cardboard for planting.

Cardboard works a treat to keep landscaping-turned-weed (like Nandina) from popping up in unwanted places. I also use cardboard around some of my tomatoes.  I place mulch on top of the cardboard.

Cardboard will be effective through most of a growing season. It will biodegrade, and your soil insects and worms will incorporate it into the soil.

Good morning each,  I have covered my strawberry patch with a plastic membrane, white(ish) on one side and black on't other, not a weed in sight.  Works a treat but I haven't got a clue where I got it!

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
