peas
« on: July 12, 2023, 18:42 »
we grew several rows of peas this season I was unsure if we would have a crop due to the dry weather but we did manage to get some pickings we had a few pea pods with caterpillars in them  does anyone know how these caterpillars get inside peas I  guess I its a larva  of the pea moth ?

so can you spray the pea crop against these  caterpillar or does it go with the territory I presume commercial pea growers spray the pea crop to control these bugs because we are talking many acres of peas grown for processing bug free

You are definitely correct that it’s the pea moth larvae.
I think farmers may spray but timing is important.
I had a good crop this year but I covered with fine mesh which seems to have prevented damage.
Keep digging

If you want to spray against pea moth you should do it about 10 days after they start to flower.  Do it in the evening.

This is an excellent way to combat pea moth, if it is feasible for you.  Peas are self fertile so don’t need to be pollinated by bees.

Maybe I'm just lucky but after a poor germination, I resowed and the crop is excellent. In fact I'm just typing this after picking enough for tonight's meal from just three plants. My family and neighbours will all get plenty from me over the next week or so
