Best vegetable seeds for a 5 year old
« on: November 12, 2022, 10:43 »
My 5 year old niece has just been given a cold frame and wants to grow vegetables. I want it to be fun and succesful for her. Can anyone suggest what she should grow.

I have been told that Parsley Plain or French and Mustard Red Frills can be sown all year round. Is this the case? It would be nice for to start growing something straight away. I was also thinking of Roquette Rucola for the spring.

All suggestions/ experiences welcome!

Anything she likes to eat that will work in a cold frame.  If she loves carrots, grow those if the soil is OK for that.  If she likes many vegetables, and there is room, try a few things she likes.

In the spring/summer, if she has a space outside of the cold frame, if there is room for melons or pumpkins that can produce fruit in your conditions, try that.  Small pumpkins suitable for a pumpkin pie provide a nice treat!

I'd say something quick growing to keep the initial interest going.  Salad leaves are quite good especially if you promote the fact she could  eat them over that 'special' time next month.  :)

Carrots - sugarsnax  Fast to grow -  pull, wash, eat - leaves make a fun handle to hold while you munch.

Radish- scarlet globe, if they like something spicy.

Strawberry - Selva, wild strawberry cross, sweet and crops all summer until the cold weather arrives, pick and eat as they ripen.

My little one loves sugarsnap peas. I have to wait while he's at school to get chance to taste any

If she wants to get growing straight away, try some broad beans Alquadulce Claudia which can be sown now and have nice big seeds and chunky seedlings.

Cress?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I know this isn't a vegetable, but if there's space for a little alpine strawberry plant it will bring her many months of small, sweet strawberries.  My young granddaughter loves raiding mine every time she visits, and it is still producing strawberries even now.

When my boy was younger the main things he liked to grow with me were:

Radishes - They grow so quick, kids can be impatient
Sungold tomatoes - Because they're so sweet
Kohl Rabi - Because 'They look like aliens'

Not sure how tall the cold frame is but might some dwarf hardy peas be good for this time of year?
