potato storage
« on: February 21, 2020, 12:27 »
Hi for some time now I have through bad health unable to tend to my veg patch. I have today 21/02/2020 dug up the rows of my late potato's by the  signs of the brown dead storks. Some are green but there are many that are very firm and have no damage to them. So would I still be able to eat these. many thanks.

Sorry to hear you have been unwell.

If the potatoes are not green, they should be fine to eat.  The ground is a pretty good storage area if you can get away with it, without slug or rodent damage.  It sounds like you have been lucky and should be able to salvage a fair bit of your crop  :)

This is an interesting question.
Last year I was unable to tend my plot and my spuds did not get harvested 'on time' . Some were pest damaged and fortunately the majority were okay.  I have since turned over the plot and found the inevitable stray which looked okay but I chose to discard , it would appear I acted in haste and may have to return to the supermarket when our spud store runs out.

we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg

I'm still digging up my Charlotte spuds …

Have to chop out the occasional sluggy bit but they're generally fine to eat.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
