Plastic stuff doesn't break down as you know, but if they were wool carpets they should eventually be incorporated into the soil. If you have any worries I'd try raised beds as you can make a heap of soil and just put something in it (courgettes??) to keep the lottie managers happy.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
