Hi all,please can you help,we always buy onion sets,and our problem is when they grow most of them end up with flat bottoms,what are we doing wrong ?

Probably nothing. Flat bottoms are to do with variety in my understanding, with Stuttgarter being the most obvious one. I grow it every year and it's a great onion. Globe onions are quite a different shape.

On the subject of onions, here are my over wintered Troy onions this morning down below. They are magnificent, I'm delighted with them, well over two feet tall and probably the best over wintered crop I've had. It could be the weather we've clearly had, but I think it proves how important a good fertile bed is for onions. These are growing on a previously home composted bed teeming with life. Every year I have a best crop on my plot, and every year the best crops are on beds I've spread my home brewed compost, lots of it.

Sorry Alan/gill, just seen your post. I'm usually a Senshyu person. I got the Troy in a local garden centre, but I have seen them around in several retail outlets, there isn't a massive choice of Autumn onions. I planted them on 19 September, usual time. Maybe the rain has helped this Winter too LOL. Will start tucking into them next week.
