rust on broad beans
« on: August 28, 2017, 19:27 »
Evening All

I have had a very poor year with my broadbeans.Pods with few beans inside, and really
bad rust. what I was wondering are they ok to put in the compost bin.

I did as most of the rest of the site had rust on their plants, so I reckoned it made little difference to the amount of rust spores around.  You might feel differently if you are growing in your own garden.

I had some normal broad beans as someone gave me some seeds and they were the same as yours - covered in rust and few beans.  My autumn sown Wizard beans got spots of rust, shrugged it off and grew a huge crop, without any interference from me.

Just a thought for your autumn sowing plans  :)

To quote from the RHS

"Destroy infected plant material because spores produced at the end of the season can survive in a semi-dormant state in crop residues and on seed"

Did New Shoots rust come in the seed?

Did New Shoots rust come in the seed?

It marched across the site from a plot the other end.  We do have a lot of abandoned plots at the moment, so it could well have come from plants last year whose remains are still in the ground.  We had a lovely show of flowering leeks and garlic this year  ::)
