Feeding spring onions
« on: September 17, 2016, 12:55 »
For the first time I'm growing a spring onion (White Lisbon) to over-winter and harvest in spring. Do I need to give them any feed such as a sprinkling of bone-meal?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If your soil is reasonably fertile there is no need to feed now. The thing to avoid is any nitrogen as that may make the onions grow lush and soft. What you want are hard plants that will stand the Winter.

As soon as there is any sign of growth in the Spring give them some nitrogen. Any liquid feed will do this, but growmore or chicken pellets sprinkled along the rows and hoed in will do as well.

Ah - thought adding any nitrogen would do that. My soil nutrition should be fine enough to last them over the winter then I'll see how they go. Thanks.
