Lemongrass - growing advice please
« on: July 01, 2016, 21:11 »
Two years running, I've tried to grow lemon grass.  I've tried it in two separate pots each year, one in the porch, which is warm and one in the greenhouse which is cooler.  Both grow well, survive the winter looking healthy and then turn brown and die in the spring.  Any tips for success gratefully received.

Have they definitely died? I only ask because I rooted some last year, grew it in a pot outdoors then brought it into the house over the winter. I thought it had died but over the last couple of weeks there are new sideshoots growing.

I can't say that my efforts have been as successful as on this blog, but there might be some information here that's of use:

One is definitely dead as I pulled it apart when I took it out of the pot & it was all totally brown.  The other one is still sitting in the greenhouse, but it's been looking brown with no sign of life for several weeks now, so I assume it's the same.  It's odd because I know they like warmth and I could understand if they died over winter, but they all turn up their toes in the spring instead, when you would think they would be growing well.

This is my effort from a stalk taken from morrisons and rooted.

The odd thing is that I've never used it in cooking yet...

So....how did you do it?!  I'm planning on rooting some more, but don't want to start until I have more idea of how to keep them alive...because it's SO annoying to get them almost large enough to start using and then they die on me.  >:(

I think I read a bit of something about rooting them on the internet and it worked.  From memory it was just put it into water for a couple of weeks and change the water.  Once roots appear then it's planted into compost.

I have a large PT though so it's a very good growing environment for once it's started off.

Good Luck!
