Moving a grapevine
« on: May 16, 2016, 19:45 »
We're moving house in the next 5 to 6 weeks (hopefully) and hubby has decided to take the grapevine with us. It is currently sitting in the garden in a large pot. It is quite a thick trunk that is about 5 feet tall. If we cut the trunk down will it produce new shoots/buds or do we risk killing it it?

Hopefully I've added some pictures of it….  You might be able to see there was already a small bud growing in the first picture...
Any advice will be gratefully received.  :)

You can cut the top down without a problem as long as the root system has survived the upheaval. It looks a fairly big vine to move. If the root system is ok it will re-shoot from somewhere on whatever stem is left or maybe throw up a sucker, I would guess it will create a lot of new buds so cutting back the top will reduce the points at which it will try to re-sprout saving resources. I would only let a couple of shoots grow and rub the others out so as not to overload the roots.

Thanks for the advice

Update on the vine... Hubby has halved the height and it has 2 buds on the stem near the bottom (you can see one bud in the top piccy).

We are still 3-4 weeks from moving so will keep the vine well watered and see how it goes.

I'll keep you updated  :)
