Very small summer raspberries
« on: July 11, 2015, 20:27 »
My summer raspberries have finally appeared - but they are Ken Dodd diddy...
I have to admit to never giving them too much attention - most years they get few handfuls of chicken poop, sometimes a mulch of half rotted compost(ish) stuff and then the occasional splash of water. Same applies this year - normally they're fine with that (lack of) care regime but this time round the fruits are tiny. I'm thinking that its most likely  a lack of water?
I've been considering removing the summer fruiting raspberries for a while - think its time to grub them up...

Pip pip,
Balders

It's lack of water - all the summer rasps on our allotments are the same, so I've started giving my Autumn ones a deep watering every week. Fingers crossed  :)

I think we talked about this last year- I've given mine one last chance alongside the thornless Tayberry and there's no contest.  The raspberries are all coming out this Autumn to be replaced by runners of of the motherplant (of which there are loads).

There's always a temptation to take out things that don't seem to be doing well but, check that you won't leave a "fruit gap". My summer raspberries slot in nicely after the strawberries to give us our summer fresh fruit.

I'm wondering if I need to rub out some of the new shoots (not you dear), because there is a huge swathe of new growth and not many Joan J rasps...

This their second year, and they've romped away, but as you say, Sir Pip Pip, they're pretty small!

They did get a large dollop of farmyard manure last autumn, but not much more!
