Strawberries -after the cropping ends
« on: July 09, 2015, 23:07 »
Advice, please. My first year Ken Muir strawberries have all been picked and eaten. I don't need to propagate runners, so do I remove all runners now?

At what stage do I remove all leaves?

You can remove all runners as they grow. As for cutting leaves back, I'd leave it until the autumn  or when they look a bit tired as they will be putting vitality back into the plant for next year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I always work on the principle that healthy green leaves are doing some good for the plant whilst red or ragged leaves are best removed. That is applied all year round with strawbs.

After they have finished fruiting feed them up for next year.

Different opinions!

I cut them back hard at this time of year and give them a feed-they bounce back quickly. I tend to use a hand cultivator to collect up the straw and dead leaves which I find very effective. I'm contemplating doing the cutting back today.

However if the plants are only a year old I would be a bit more gentle with them this year.

The RHS advice is to cut off old leaves. You don't want to be cutting off fresh growth as this will only set the plant back and it will have to start again. Leaves with vitality are the plant's food factory.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sheared over them today and scraped up all the old straw and debris leaving the net off for the birds to deal with the pests.  I read that was the right thing to do and you get a later crop...
Well it worked last year and I got an amazing crop from them again this year!
