I have always had rubbish results with spring onions and now realise that I have not given them the care that they should have, like a lot of people I just thought of them as a space filler and sow direct into the ground, a bit more care this year might give me better results, thanks for opening my eyes, Dave

I hope that there are now spring onions everywhere -- they are so undemanding really and such a versatile vegetable too  :D :D

Unless you want spring onions very early all this faffing with modules is probably not worth it. I sow spring onions in a row with leeks. Then pull the onions when they are big enough and plant out the leeks when they get pencil thick.

They are so slow growing that you are just giving them a chance not to get lost in the weeds, of eaten by slugs and snails. I got much better results with modules than I do with direct sowing.

Snap.

I am not sure I could tell the difference between my spring onions and leeks... the leeks can grow awful slow some years

I grew a variety called Pompeii for the first time last season and had better results than I ever had in 20+ years of growing White Lisbon.

I'm having a crack at those this year as well as 7 other types and will monitor the progress of each type.

I do the same as Cadalot I will be starting some off this week indoors, I just use my float tray I like Ishikura and Guardsman I will plant them out in early spring. I keep on planting every few weeks so I get a long crop. I also cover them with a 6' long drain pipe or mound them up so it blanches the stems.
