Sweet corn in a propagator?
« on: May 01, 2015, 23:34 »
Hi folks, I'm starting my sweet corn in root trainers, do I put them in a propagator or just a sunny windowsill?

I put mine in the heated propagator and whipped them out as soon as the little green points showed (4 days). They were so quick to germinate that I would think a windowsill would probably work as well the propagator.

This year i have germinated swift sweetcorn on damp kitchen paper on the heated bench, then as they shoot, which is really quick, plant them in to root trainers, kept on a window sill to grow some more, then will harden them off to plant them down allotment in a months time, hopefully this way all the root trainers will have a plant growing in them!

Sweet corn are quite good at rotting and needs some heat to start. I would put them in a heated propagator until the shoots show and then put them on a window.

As has been said, chitting them on damp kitchen paper in a propagator ( or airing cupboard) gets them going. Just a couple of days is all that is needed. Look at them twice a day and try and plant as soon as there are chits. Leave them too get too long and planting is difficult.

I have never thought of putting them in the propagator, but it does sound sensible if you are not going to chit them first. Saves a bit of rotting off maybe?

My propagator is currently empty so I think I shall put them in -- only sown two days ago so can't be rotten yet, surely?

I didn't chit mine, never even crossed my mind, but there was 100% germination.  Far far better percentage than peas.

I don't chit but I do use the heated prop. I don't think they're especially tender though

I dont chit.  Just into root trainers and then into the propagator.  They're up in a few days then into a warm sunny space.  I'll be setting some more off tomorrow.

Sweet corn does not like it if the temperature drops much below 10 deg C. The forecast here looks OK for the next week but any threat of frost they need to be inside. Left out or planted out in the cold and they stop growing and sulk for a while.
