Hi from Farnham (Farnborough Road)
« on: February 10, 2015, 11:38 »
Hi.
Nice to meet you all! I got access to my new allotment a couple of weeks back. Have had a bit of a dig already and the soil looks pretty good under the weeds. Should I put black plastic on 1/2 my plot for now? Will 500g heavy duty stuff be ok. Should i put roundup on the rest of the plot? Oh so many questions - where do I start?!
Jo

Hi Jo and welcome to the site. :)
At this time of year it's not usually worth spraying the weeds. They aren't growing strongly enough and it's not usually dry enough. Covering it with black plastic will certainly start to kill them off, and keeping it on till you're ready to dig the ground underneath will help.

Welcome to this great site. You will find lots of advice on here both from the Articles and Advice link at the top left and also from other growers. Apart from echoing what others have said, you may find different advice for a problem but it's what suits you, your plot, and where you live. If you put Farnborough in your profile it will be helpful for us later on. Also, there is no such thing as a stupid question! Just enjoy yourself.  :)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Cardboard works quite well too at suppressing weeds (big sheets are usually available from bike shops etc).

Then you could pile on some manure and it'll all rot down.  Takes a while so you might want to do that on a bit where you aren't planning to grow stuff straight away. As someone said before - don't try and tackle it all at once!

thanks All
Hoping to get down there this weekend, armed with some black plastic and a fork! It looks as though my plot is in 4 sections so I'm taking your advice and starting on one and covering the others to start off with. Will add Farnham to my profile too
Jo
