Going 'light'
« on: September 05, 2014, 19:39 »
I have a Buff Orpington and I have 3 of them, but one seems very light when compared to the other 2

I think she has gone 'light'

There isnt a lot of her, just looks big with all the feathers, she is about 12-16 weeks old

What causes a chicken to go 'light' and is there a cure for it ?

She seems to just pick at her food and water, I have put her favourites out for her, mash potatoes, with garlic, mixed corn, greens and of course pellets

The mash, greens and corn usually go fast

She is in isolation at the moment, plenty of bedding, food, water

She has scarcely moved all day, just pecks at her food

Any ideas, suggestions ?
It's all about the journey, not the destination

A couple of years ago I had the same problem with some RIR growers - only one was going downhill. I think I posted on this site. It turned out to be redmite in the coop I was keeping them in. I ended up losing one of them before I discovered the cause. I assume that you have checked the crop, checked for raspy breathing, any nasties in their run she could have eaten and worms? If you have, then try looking for redmite. I was devastated when I found out it was something I could have prevented. If there is no sign, then the only thing I can suggest is the vet.

Let us know how you get on

Nope, no red mites and she has eaten everything the others hace, unless it was something I didnt see

Her crop seems empty, but so does the others

Could be lots of things. Would suggest you feed only growers pellets with a general pick me up such as Poultry Spice. Also check for lice other passengers. Hope she's ok :)

One of mine did this and went really sulky, tail down and mooched around the run when she wasn't constantly sitting down.

I gave her a warm bath with Epsom salts in it and she was back to her normal self almost immediately.  I did take her to the vet beforehand but he found nothing wrong, no parasites etc.  it may be worth a go, and they do love being blow dried!

Been to the vet, nothing wrong with her he could find, she just stands in the box with her head tucked in her feathers, not running around like the rest (she is in a box at the moment

Not quite sure what to do now

Just have to hope swhe ewats and puts on a bit of weight
