Drunken Hen!
« on: January 08, 2008, 17:53 »
I wonder if someone can help me please? When I came home from work today I found our two girls (2yrs old) being cosseted in the utility room as my Partner tells me one has been acting rather strangely this afternoon.

One of them is in the middle of a moult but is walking in a 'drunken' fashion and crouching as she walks. Her feet cross over as she walks but she appears quite stable. She can jump onto the worktops and balance on the edge of the sink. She is eating and drinking ok and doesn't seem confused any more than normal.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi, and welcome :D

Could she have eaten something that didn't agree with her?

I read yesterday about a dog that had got drunk from eating yeast dough that had fermented in his stomach, couldn't be anything like that could it?

Thanks to one and all for your replies. I wouldn't be surprised if she did eat something nasty and her food did get wet today as it has been raining rather alot up here, so fermentation is a possibility.

However, the good news is that she appears to be recovering and has taken up residence on the draining-board in the utility room with her girlfriend. Dogs and cats are not amused!

Will keep you informed tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Just a quick update. Goldie is much better now and seems to be much better. Unfortunately it has been another very wet and cold day up here but she took shelter under cover thank goodness.

It is worrying when these unexplained things happen and as these are my first two chicks I want to make sure they live a long and happy life. Once again thanks for the options, advice and quick replies.

I'm glad she's feeling better, it probably was something she had eaten, hopefully she will have learnt her lesson :D

My two hens were just standing out in the rain yesterday, getting soaked -- I had to bring them in, towel dry them and shut them in their house; sometimes I think they forget that they can go into the coop if they want to
