Blowaway greenhouses
« on: March 13, 2014, 22:46 »
I don't have anything else so I want to put a 4 shelf blowaway up on the plot. I have a post and rail fence I could attach it to, or the side of the pallet compost heap. Any suggestions for how best to attach it?

Based on painful experience last year I wouldn't put it up until late April. Because if you tie it down then in strong winds you risk :
a if you peg down the frame using wide tent pegs it bends the frame:
b if you also tie the cover using guy ropes it tears the plastic cover.
Best option is a wind strap for a caravan awning but you may still get a bent frame!
If you want proof I have the torn cover and bent frame from last year! :(

Buy some 20mm conduit saddles from fleabay and attach via these to the fence.

If you have a B&M Bargains nearby, those four shelf blowaways are £9.99. That's cheaper than buying a replacement cover from certain DIY chains.

I'd put the back of it against the fence so that the prevailing winds blow onto its front, then use nylon string to attach it to the fence / posts by tying round it at the top of the zip on the cover, and also bottom of the zip if you feel like it.

I've attached mine to a drainpipe the same way for years, and the frame is intact / it hasn't blown over.  I'd advise against hessian string as that perishes easily.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i have no experience of these but could you make a platform for it to sit on from heavy/ thick paving slabs. drill (either one hole for bolting through the frame or two holes if you want secure over the frame) in the slabs in the place where the corners of the greenhouse will be. push bolt and washer up from underneath (i would prob secure in place with liquid cement) then bolt the frame to the slabs.

free standing, and you can un bolt and pack away for winter. if you want to move the slabs you could take them up and re lay in spring.

Last year I used tent pegs over the bottom members and filled plastic milk bottles with sand and cable tied to the uprights - as the name suggests it still blew away  :nowink:  but at least it was at the end of the season  :)

They have a very high centre of gravity because they are so tall in proportion to their surface area.  That's why I tie mine at the top, to prevent it being blown over from the bottom.

I would put 2 solid posts up ( if out in the open) and fix the blowaway with bungee luggage straps. That's what we do and still intact after 4 years

I picked up 3 number 4 tier ones at a £5 each at the ASDA end of season sale last year and they are now inside my real greenhouse as staging and grow houses within the greenhouse for extra warmth during March and April

That's a lot of suggestions thanks. Fatcat, do you use the conduit clip things by nailing them through the plastic cover?

I think I'll try a combo of all the answers. Def tying at the top, and ill weight down the bottom too. What is a proper stopper greenhouse?  And are they big or expensive?  Just in case I have to start again if my blowaway blows away!

I have one in my GH too and it works a treat. I also got a fleece cover for it from Wilko as extra protection, plus a GH thermometer which is suspended from one of the racks. I stand it on insulation stuff so the cold doesn't strike up from the bottom. I haven't used it outside as it would probably be seen heading towards Ireland given the winds we have here.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
