What are the best conditions for chitting potatoes? Mine are in the shed by a window. I'm worried about frosts. Any advice?

I would say if you think your shed is not frostproof, bring them indoors.  I'm lucky to have a cool spare bedroom but anywhere away from the frost is much more preferable.

Frost free and in the light. Mine are indoors on a NE facing window sill, away from radiators.

For me, this is the time of year when the family pays back the months of fresh grub .... So the tatties get the back bedroom window sill    no frost, coolish, and not too bright ... Perfect  .

Six weeks before you intend to plant bring them into the warm and light for a day or two. This will break their dormancy. As soon as you see any chits starting, move them somewhere cool, light and frost free. About 10 C keeps them ticking along but not too fast.

Mine are in the unheated porch, which is cold (but frost free) and fairly light.

Pentland Javelin are chitting well but there's no sign of life from Pink Fir Apple. Is this anything to worry about, do you think?

Some spuds are more reluctant chitters than others - as long as there are no obvious signs of disease or rotting they'll be fine.

Thanks. I guess it's less critical to get them started than the earlies anyway.

They probably need a little more warmth than the PJ's to break their dormancy - whether you temporarily move them somewhere warmer or leave them where they are and hope for some warmer weather before planting time  is up to you (I'd leave them where they are.)

I have found in the past and again this year that PFA are slow to chit.  This can be seen as a plus point as it makes them excellent for storing.
