Long shallots
« on: February 11, 2014, 23:20 »
I've just come across some lovely long, as opposed to round, shallots at the supermarket, and loved how easy they were to peel and use. Is there a variety of these that anyone knows of that I could grow with success up at the allotment (swimming pool...  ;) ) ?

This is the sort of thing you're after, grew them last year with great success.

Banana Shallots This is just an example, others are available!

It's a bit fiddly planting out a few hundred plants at 4" spacing, but well worth the effort.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew them last year (zebrune) and (Figaro) and they were great.

I even found some last week hiding under the tundrer cabbage and they were perfect.

I grew Longor last year and was very pleased with them.  :)

I grew figaro last year and was very pleased.   I also sowed LR Florence and didn't have space for them (hangs head) in the end.  Once i've got my onions done, I'll start on the shallots

A second vote for Longor along with Auntiemogs.  I have grown these for the last couple of years and I have been very pleased with both yield and storage.  When I harvested mine in the summer I still had some left from the previous year that were in good condition.

I have grown "Long Red Florence" and it can grow very big, but I think that it is actually an onion rather than a shallot.

A few sites do list it as a Banana Shallot, though,  realfood.
