Holly hocks & Lupins
« on: January 26, 2014, 06:28 »
I have had a lovely display of holly hocks and lupins in a raised bed,I bought these as plug plants.
Question
Now the flowers have died off what do I do??
Leave them?
Cut them down?
Will they come back and flower again?
As you can tell from my questions,I am not much of a flower gardener.

I like to grow veg.

Both should come back and flower for you this year.  You can tidy up the old dead foliage and flower stalks, but be careful near the bases of the plants, as the new leaves for this year might well already be sprouting  :)

They should also self seed. Meaning you will soon be over crowded. A nice problem. Hollyhocks suffer from rust which will carry over on old plants, so some people remove the old plants and leave the seedlings to take over.

I should warn you that slugs are rather partial to fresh young lupin shoots.....

Ok, looks like I am going to have a battle, trying to keep slugs at bay.

Thanks
