I have just got an allotment and noticed that alongside my plot there are stacks of nettles.

This year, for my garden greenhouse tomatoes I made some nettle tea and used it. It seemed to work very well, although it does make quite a pong. It took about 4-6 weeks after making it, before it could be used.

I was thinking of getting a water butt, then making the nettle tea now. In a couple of months I could drain off the liquid and bottle it, ready to use next year.

Will my idea work ?

Would the fertilizer be as good next summer as it will be, when first ready,  in about 6 weeks.

It may store, I'm hoping the same. The rotted down nettles are also good to throw on the garden. It will keep the tom plants green that's for sure, as its full of nitrogen. Tomatoes need a high pottasium feeds to aid fruiting, and comfrey tea fits the bill perfectly.

Actually, by the time I used the nettle tea, my tomato pants had produced their crop ... all I was really concerned about was to get the toms already there, to get bigger.

Prior to using the nettle tea I had been used Phostrogen. I actually also (early in the season) had sprinkled some of those slow release fertilizer granules in each pot.

I have some worm juice which is a year or so old keeps well in old milk bottles
