I have also lost a cream legbar who went lame and developed a hock abscess.
Vets fees amounting to £250 in one month for two chickens - my friends think I'm crackers but the chooks develop their own personalities and become pets.

WOW  I am not alone  .....  what a relief  Ive just spent £100 on my BO cockerel having his eye treated & then removed!!!!!
