Mincrop potatoes and the weather
« on: July 29, 2013, 19:02 »
I've never grown maincrop before, but thought I would give the ubiquitous and oft maligned Maris Piper a go, as they were going cheap and I had a spare bed.
I dug a couple of plants yesterday for some 'new' potatoes, but really to have a nose, and I've got to say if they run full term with no rude interruptions from blight, then I'm going to have a huge healthy harvest... the potatoes were crisp, clean and hugely plentiful, I was amazed. Considering the bed wasn't the best prepared and only supplemented with chicken pellets early on, I'm a happy bunny.
We're well past last year's blight disaster date, and with only 4 weeks to go for my crop's maturity, I can see a great many allotmenteers getting away with it this year.
It was dry early on, perfect, and only the need for one big manual soak, and now large downpours forecast for the business end, but still warm and enough proper sunlight in between. Can't have been better. I don't think blight has enough time to get it's act together to spoil it all for potatoes now. For tomatoes, maybe, but not the spuds.

I've got blackled on my Desiree so they're being pulled as soon as they show signs.

All my earlies, then the Charlottes went down with blackleg - now it has spread to the Desiree  :(

I'm going to use a different seed supplier next year, to see what happens - but it'll be extra important to rotate now, and make sure no volunteers are allowed to grow!

Wow I was lucky it was just an odd tuber of Shetland black that I'd used to infill at the end f a row which got black leg, I pulled it early and all the others look good

I've got something (not blackleg but still looks pretty bad) on all my stunted charlottes, but the desirees are all ok so far (cross fingers, touch wood). I won't be going back to T&M again for seed potatoes.
