Chip potatoes
« on: September 20, 2006, 23:24 »
Until this year I had always grown Majestic potatoes specially for chips as I love them, cooked in a proper chip pan with a wire basket. I read on a web site somewhere last Winter that the variety 'Golden Wonder' made superb chips, so I tracked some down at a local garden centre near Harrogate where you can buy any quantity of potatoes, as they are sold by weight. A good idea for small plotholders or for experimentation with varieties. So I bought three to try, and last week I harvested them. They were incredibly hard to cut, but when it came to tasting them I was not disappointed! They were wonderful! Highly recommended. Majestics, however give a much bigger yield, and they are almost as good so I will still be growing them every year. For boiling potaoes I use 'Romano'.

We have grown Cara this year. They went in a bit late and so the yield was a bit low also lots of ellworm.  For taste though wonderful boil and chip well not tried roasting yet but should be good Not baking any this year don't fancy the extra protien :)

British Queen my favourite.  Chip, roast and mash superbly.

Edzell Blue.  Steam them to avoid them collapsing.

Pink Fir Apple - great potato, but poor yield.

Red Dukes - love them, boiled if you're careful.
