Wood Chip
« on: January 13, 2009, 12:32 »
I've just cleared my plot, largely of out of control willow. I've cut out the good bits of willow and stored to go on the wood burner next winter. However I'm now left with all the brush that I'm going to put through a wood chipper.

Question, what do I do with the chip? Can I spread it on the land to act as a fertiliser?

Many thanks

No, dont put it on the land, it will do more harm than good while its fresh.
Let it rot down for 12 - 18 months and it could be used as a mulch.
Or use it to make pathes.

So if I sack it in a corner, can I use it as fertiliser next year?

How about those big make your own compost rotating barrels you see?

More a mulch really.

The problem is, even tho it will have been thru a chipper is is still large bits of woody tissue to break down.
I have a pile in my garden, been there 2 years and still not fully rotted.

You can put it in a special compost bin with some human urine (but not direct or there'll be complaints   ), or simply hose it down now and then. I had a large chip pile and it took 2 years to mostly break down but it eventually does, but never directly incorporated into the garden until then. In a mass, it builds up decomposing heat.
