Amazing Kale but what next?
« on: June 13, 2013, 10:00 »
Last year I planted kale in the autumn to overwinter in a polytunnel (Nero toscana). In March we went on a 3 month sabbatical and left the garden to look after itself. When we returned in June the kale was thriving and still is. We have had meal after meal from the plants. I keep expecting them to bolt but instead they just produce more lovely leaves.

I am trying to plan what I grow this year but dont know how long the Kale will keep going for. Has anyone any idea?

Planted Toscana last year (outside) and it kept us going right up to November!

Planted too much really , so picked and froze what we didn't eat before the weather ruined what was still standing... That only got finished around March / April this year.

This year again, we've planted Toscana, not as much though, so to make room for a different dwarf kale variety because, since trying it last year for the first time, we now prefer it to cabbage.

As for how long it lasts...? Not sure,we just kept picking and it seemed to keep growing, in the end it was waist high!

It is growing where I had planned to put the parsnips so no parsnips this year unless the asparagus is dead. I keep walking past the asparagus bed whispering the word parsnip but it isn’t provoking them to grow yet   ;)

I am almost looking forward to the kale bolting as apparently the flower shoots are a gourmet treat raw or cooked!

In a perfect world it will continue to feed us until the pak choi and spinach are ready  :D

Tuscany kale has definitely found a permanent place on my list of what to grow.

Once up and running kale has to be one of the most productive and user friendly brassicas there are. Even when I grew veg in my garden we had good crops right through the Winter. Not sure of the Toscana but the normal curly kale tends to have gone to seed by now, just after the bonus of the fresh Spring growth that people really like.
