Storing roots i.e. beetroot and turnip
« on: July 24, 2008, 14:56 »
So my beetroots and turnips are coming on nicely and hopefully I will have enough to put some into store.

From what I have read it seems that to store either beetroot or turnip they should be kept in a box of sand or soil or peat?

If this is the case what sort of soil? Should it be wet or dry? How long will they last if stored like this?

Any advice on storage please!

Hi,

I have lots of beetroot as well,so I have been looking this up.
My Dr.Hessayon book (my Bible) say to lift the roots in October, place between layers of dry peat or sand(probably white?)in a stout box and store in shed and they will keep until March.

You can freeze them aswell, just cook them as normal, slice them and freeze, they will last about 3 to 6 months

hope that helps,
Charlotte. :)
