Peas stop growing and going pale ?
« on: June 03, 2013, 13:18 »
Hi, My peas (which I started in the greehouse in paper pots) started to grow ok in the allotment but have now stopped growing and are going pale.

I have been watering them but have not fed them.....could that be it? If so what should I feed them with?

I don't hold out that much hope for them and may start some others by sowing direct.

Any advice or experiences welcomed,

Many thanks
Tim
Thinking of calling my shed "the Dun Inn".

Yes, I know. I'm thinking.

I never feed peas either!

Did you harden them off first? Have you over-watered? My ground's still wet from the last deluge and the only time I've watered any of my plants this year is just the once when they've first been put in. I didn't even bother doing that with the beans I put in a couple of days ago.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would go with over watering too .
The way i grow them is ... dig a long trench ... fill with about 4 inches of compost  and a sprinkle of fish blood and bone , then back fill the trench with soil , i plant my peas very close together along the trench , then when the flowers appear ... i give them a watered down tomato feed ( not everybody feeds there plants ... but i've always done this with great crops ) then i just leave them to get on with it , as soon as the peas are ready ... pick pick pick , they will throw more flowers out ... dont feed again , i only feed the once .
Hope this a bit of help to you  ;)

I just throw mine in the ground, and let them get on with it, this year I even mixed the peas, french beans runners and broad beans, it seems to have worked so far.

Thanks everyone, I think I am guilty of not hardening off, will they recover or should I just direct sow some more?

It wouldn't do any harm to sow more next to the ones you've already put in - a 2 inch gap is enough between them ;)
