No show garlic
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:22 »
I've been wondering what's happened to my garlic which was planted in the autumn.  Dug up a few cloves today a none have grown any roots at all!  Some look like they may have had a top sprout growing but that has been chewed off.  Really can't understand what's happened!  Any ideas?  I was careful not to damage the base plate on planting and the soil is good, well drained and improved with home made compost.  I'm so disappointed  :(

Hi did you cover them. As they grow the birds think they are worms and pull them out. Maybe this is what has happened.

I know that rabbits eat garlic shoots (and onions + leek as well) in winter when they are hungry. So maybe they are the culprits.

alliums are toxic to rabbits its more likely to be birds.

Mine were from Wilko, they are perfectly intact, not rotting, just how they went in really  ???

You could try digging them up and potting them and see what happens, or just leave them. I have had garlic not come up the first year then grow the second. You might find that they have a sudden spurt this year. If they are not rotting or damaged, they will probably grow eventually when the conditions are right for them. :)

I always have a few that don't come up, but never a whole batch.

Did you buy them all from the same place? Might have been something wrong with them if not 1 grew =/

My understanding is they do need a dormant period of 3 months or so.

After my failures I tried some supermarket uk varieties and they've shot up probably because they were in refrigerated supermarket storage

My January-sown garlic came up in 4.5 weeks, but my Feb-sown garlic is only just starting to show itself after 6.5 weeks. All the cloves are the same variety, they are growing in the same area, although the Feb-sown are in individual pots and the Jan-sown are in one big bag. Mebbe yours will come up in a bit?
