seed leaves.

How long should tommy seedlings seed leaves last for? Mine seem to die back as soon as the first true leaves show themselves. One of my neighbours has plants further on than mine by some way, and they seem to still have healthy seed leaves. ???

They are only there to make food for the first true leaves to grow. So it doesn't matter how long they last after that  ;)

I've also noticed today that the plants which have developed decent true leaves are  withering slightly at the tips, after losing their seed leaves. Could my compost be running out of nutrients?

Yes, I was wondering if I may have the tinfoil a bit too close to the seedlings giving too much light, and possibly too hot as well?

The very fragile new growth at the end of the leaves is the first to show signs of stress by withering slightly

Water is leaving them faster than the roots can take it up and pass it on, so....

.... too hot, too bright or too dry

Or all three of course

The good news is they should recover and grow new leaves very quickly  :D

Provided of course they don't stay too hot, dry and bright. ;)
Or do they get accustomed to the unusual brightness and temp?
They're certainly not too dry.
