broad beans
« on: April 15, 2013, 17:08 »
I put some broad bean plants out, after hardening them off, I noticed today that some of the stems near the base have gone black.
Are they ok?

Does not sound good. What do the leaves look like? If the stem rots the leaves will look poorly.

Black is not good as it sounds as though they have rotted

If you cut them off below the black section, they will most likely sprout again

Or it is not too late to sow more of course

Don't take them out if the leaves seem OK, but keep a careful eye on them to make sure the plants don't suddenly collapse

Best answer, Shedders - I think you may need them - sorry!

We're not far apart geographically, and the climate round here is veeeery odd at the moment so 'nil desperandum'!

Of course, there's still time to grow some more beans from seed! We do the last lot ages away yet!

Keep going eh?
