are the white or purple  carrots any more resistant to the dreaded carrot fly or is that wishful thinking

I don't think so Frazzy, or the seed companies would be shouting it from the rooftops. The Flyaway types are bred to be low in chlorogenic acid, which is what the carrot flies home in on. Most other carrots will probably have the usual amount regardless of colour.
